Ready. Willing Able - Including Disabled People In the Media
Abstract von Jenny Stevens, Broadcasting and Creative Industries Disability Network, London.
BCIDN brings together major UK players in television and film to explore and address disability as it relates to the media industry. The Network was started under the auspices of the Employers Forum on Disability and all members of the BCIDN are members of the Forum.

The Forum and BCIDN are the only bodies of their kind in the world. The BCIDN membership includes the leading UK broadcasters, and other related organisations.
Sharing Knowledge
The Network enables member organisations to develop their expertise on disability and to share that knowledge with each other. It makes it easier for members to recruit and retain disabled people and to promote and share best practice across the industry.

The BCIDN is also concerned with gaining more accurate representation of people with disabilities in the media. In May 2002 the Network announced its Policy Manifesto, and member companies each published their own individualised Action Plans.

The key commitments of this Manifesto are to increase the presence of disabled people on air and on screen, to increase the number of disabled people in all areas of the workforce, to increase access to services, on and off air and to ensure access to all buildings. Further to commit at Board level to produce and make public an Action Plan detailing how these commitments will implemented.
Disabled Experts
The Network has a group of Associates - disabled people
with considerable media experience, especially in broadcasting. Their role is to help the Network (and the industry) through their knowledge and understanding of both disability and the industry. Associates have a range of experience of different types of jobs in the industry (and different impairments).
UK Definition of Disability
According to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 Disability means a physical or mental impairment with long term, substantial effects on ability to perform day-to-day activities. This includes: hearing, visual or speech impairments; co-ordination, dexterity or mobility impairments - including severe back problems and Repetitive Strain Industry; mental health eg. serious depression; learning difficulties - including dyslexia: and other conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, arthritis, asthma, etc)

There are nearly 10 million disabled people in the UK, according to the latest census. There are 6,8 million adults of working age in the UK population.
