Fünf Jahre "Cultural Studies" in Österreich |

| | | Die "Cultural Studies", ein besonderer Zweig der Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften mit Ursprung im angelsächsischen Raum, finden seit einigen Jahren auch in Österreich Beachtung. Ein entsprechender Forschungsschwerpunkt feiert dieser Tage sein fünfjähriges Bestehen. Lawrence Grossberg, US-amerikanischer Vordenker der Cultural Studies (CS), blickt für science.ORF.at auf das Programm zurück - und stellt ihm ein ausgezeichnetes Zeugnis aus. Einziger Wermutstropfen: Das Jubiläum bedeutet weitgehend auch das Ende des Forschungsschwerpunkts. |

Im Jahr 1998 war vom Bildungsministerium der Forschungsschwerpunkt "Kulturwissenschaften / Cultural Studies" eingerichtet worden. In seinem Rahmen wurden über 50 Forschungsprojekte lanciert - die nun großteils abgeschlossen sind.

Lawrence Grossberg, CS-Professor an der University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill, betont in seinem Gastkommentar für science.ORF.at, dass die "Cultural Studies" die Wirklichkeit in "relationalen Begriffen" beschreiben. Diese Beschreibungen seien immer auch das Resultat bestimmter Interventionen der Forscher - was ein erhöhtes Maß an Selbstreflexion in der Produktion von Wissen bedinge.
Eine ebenfalls wesentliche Eigenschaft der CS: Ihr Blick ist auf das soziale Leben und den Alltag der Menschen gerichtet.

Interaktive Gemeinschaft etabliert |

Grossberg, selbst ein maßgeblicher Mitwirkender des österreichischen Forschungsschwerpunkts, stellt dem abgelaufenen Programmm ein gutes Zeugnis aus.
Es sei zur Etablierung einer lebendigen und interaktiven Gemeinschaft gekommen, die dem Thema zu einem erhöhten Stellenwert verholfen habe.
Lediglich ein Umstand gebe, so Grossberg, Grund zum Bedauern: Das Projekt wird leider nicht weitergeführt.

Vortrag Grossberg: "A hitchhikers guide to cultural studies"
Lawrence Grossberg ist "Morris Davis Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies" sowie Autor und Herausgeber mehrerer Bücher und Zeitschriften, darunter das Journal "Cultural Studies". Am 27. Februar hält er an der Uni Wien den Vortrag "Between Birmingham and Babel: "A hitchhikers guide to cultural studies".

Cultural studies is one of the most visible developments in the humanities and social sciences over the past few decades.
Like the most exciting work in the natural sciences, cultural studies recognizes that reality can only be described in relational terms and that such descriptions are always, in part, the result of the particular interventions of the researcher into the context of research.
As a result, cultural studies - like other developments in the sciences - is committed to interdisciplinary research and to a self-reflective approach to knowledge production.

Commitment to everyday and social life |

Cultural Studies, however, focuses on the productive effects that specific cultural practices do or may have on particular contexts of human life and action. That is, cultural studies looks at how discourses operate to construct and inflect the particular configuration of relationships that, at any time-space, constitutes the everyday and social life of people.

Austria's interactive community
While cultural studies is flourishing in many countries of the world, and is taking root in many other places, Austria is one of the few places that has had a program to encourage such work, and to develop the conditions for the emergence of a scholarly community dedicated to rigorous interdisciplinary research and lively critical exchange.
I have been privileged to be involved with this program, to witness the ways it has built upon the strong but rather fragmented group of cultural studies scholars that already existed to create a vital, interactive and internationally visible community. |

CS meet "Geisteswissenschaften" |

The program has tried, successfully I think, to encourage an extraordinarily broad range of cultural studies research.
It has also attempted, again successfully I think, to encourage a dialogue between the theoretical and methodological practices that have come to be associated with cultural studies and those research traditions of the Geisteswissenschaften that are somewhat indigenous to the Austrian academy.
The program has encouraged the development of courses in cultural studies, and sponsored conferences and travel that have contributed enormously to the visibility of Austrian intellectual production around the world.

"Real intellectual success" |

In my humble opinion, it has been a model program and a very real intellectual success. I am proud to have been associated with it, and only regret that it will not continue.
I hope that the community that has been created will find the resources (because intellectual work, like any labor, takes resources) to continue to exist and to grow productively as a group and as individual researchers.
